Where are all of these receptacles? Can you find them and take a photo of your family or group using the receptacles properly? Litter is everyone’s problem and UNLESS we all pitch in it won’t get better. Enter this contest, pick up some litter, decide if it is recyclable or not and pitch it in the right receptacle.
2012 Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off
The 2012 Don’t Mess With Texas Trash Off was held on Saturday April 14, 2012 in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful’s (KAB) Great American Clean Up. Keep Pearland Beautiful used KAB’s national slogan, “Green Starts Here,” as rallying call to encourage volunteer groups, community leaders, and people of all ages and walks of life to begin creating more sustainable communities through their individual daily choices and actions. Educating Pearland about the costs of litter and changing everyone’s attitudes about litter will help us create the cleanest and most beautiful city in Texas.
The majority of the volunteer groups that came out for this year’s Trash Off are current Adopt-A Spot participants, who assist with citywide cleanups twice per year, to fulfill their Adopt-A-Spot agreement with Keep Pearland Beautiful. Participants met at the Pearland Community Center on the day of the event for a continental breakfast at 7:30AM before heading out to make Pearland a cleaner city. Other groups like the KIPPERS (Kids in Pearland Preserving the Environment through Responsible Service) from Jamison and Sablatura Middle Schools did their campus clean ups as an after school activity.
To date, 43 groups have completed their clean up and wrap up reports. The streets of Pearland played host to 556 volunteers who worked a total of 692 hours and collected 181 bags of trash. Many volunteers expressed that the education KPB conducts during the year is impacting the amount of trash they are seeing and collecting on the streets. As always, the most littered item was cigarette butts (groups that counted their butts reported collecting 6943), but many groups reported collecting commonly littered items such as fast food wrappers, plastic bottles, and plastic shopping bags!
Keep Pearland Beautiful would like to thank the many volunteers and participants who came out and made this year’s Don’t Mess with Texas Trash Off such a successful event. Keep Pearland Beautiful was especially encouraged by all the first time volunteers that volunteered to help, including a few infants and toddlers!
The next city-wide clean-up, the Fall Trash Off, is scheduled for September 8 2012. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend our Fall Trash Off. If you are interested in our Adopt-A-Spot or Adopt-A-Plot Program, please email [email protected] or call (281) 652-1659.
