Designers entering the Recycle Runway competition will create wearable art made of items destined for the landfill or recycling. Participants will become knowledgeable about problems associated with waste generation and then express them through fashion and artistic design.
The deadline to enter has been extended to July 6, 2015. The garment does not have to be completed until the photo shoot on Aug 1, 2015 and the designer does not have to be the model.
Buying Native and Adaptive Plants for your Landscaping
Our plant sale is coming up next weekend and we want to take this time to remind you of the benefits of planting native and adaptive plants. Through our community greening programs Keep Pearland Beautiful promotes our mission to empower Pearland citizens to take responsibility for their environment. By developing sustainable yard maintenance practices our citizens become better stewards of the environment. Carefully choosing your plants, trees and shrubs so that they are heat tolerant and can survive periods of drought will help us reduce the amount of treated drinking water that we are pouring on our yards. For more information about becoming “Yardwise” and using “Yardwise practices visit this site maintained by the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling : http://www.recyclingstar.org/yardwise/yardwise-practices. Another great resource is the Lady Bird Johnson Wild Flower Center Website: http://www.wildflower.org/whynatives/.
If you are looking for particular native or adaptive plants here is a list of what we have requested for our plant sale. We will have a finalized list next week: http://keeppearlandbeautiful.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Plant-List.pdf
