Designers entering the Recycle Runway competition will create wearable art made of items destined for the landfill or recycling. Participants will become knowledgeable about problems associated with waste generation and then express them through fashion and artistic design.
The deadline to enter has been extended to July 6, 2015. The garment does not have to be completed until the photo shoot on Aug 1, 2015 and the designer does not have to be the model.
Earth Day Celebration
The Pearland community did not let the weather stop them from making the 2015 Earth Day Celebration a huge success on Saturday, April 18th. The event was able to reach over 250 attendees using 86 volunteers, 24 vendors, and 9 different games. It was a partnership between Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) and the City of Pearland. Even with two lengthy power outages volunteers were able to keep the celebration fun and eventful.
The day started with an awards breakfast for the K.I.P.P.E.R.S. (Kids in Pearland Preserving the Environment through Responsible Service), a middle school program that uses after school enrichment courses to educate students on environmental responsibility. Four middle schools (Alexander, Jamison, Rogers and Sablatura Middle Schools) honored their top Young Environmentalists Ben Mercer, William Venable III, Riley McSpadden and Kate Dies, respectively.
Highlights from the Earth Day Celebration included Peary the Partridge, Daisy the Clown and Sandy the Columbian Boa Constrictor. KIPPERS students were in charge of environmental themed games including Trash Tote, Recycle Relay, and Bottle Bowling. Other activities enjoyed by guests were snake viewing by Texas Snakes, edible composting by HEB, balloon twisting by Daisy the Clown and a plant walk hosted by K.I.P.P.E.R.S.
An unintended consequence from the event is that we conserved electricity due to the power outages! KPB would like to thank all of our sponsors: A & A Cleaning, America Modern Green Development LLC, City of Pearland, HEB, K.I.P.P.E.R.S. from Alexander, Jamison, Rogers and Sablatura Middle School, Mex Sea Co. Bar & Grill, Southland Title Co., Sweet-n-Low, and Waste Management. We look forward to making the 2016 Earth Day Celebration bigger and better with next years date to be announced soon!
