2018 Pocket Pear Speakeasy Party
Jun
16

Keep Pearland Beautiful (KPB) hosted the 10th Annual Pocket Pear Poker Speakeasy Party on June 16 raising $18,000 for the Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund. The evening started with dinner, desserts and 1920-era music provided by The Traveling Murphys. Attendees showed up in their best gangster and flapper attire for the costume contest. After dinner, the poker players got their game faces on, while the casino players turned on huge smiles as “Black Jack!” and cheers filled the room. Down to the final table, Joel Bennett, a long time attendee of Pocket Pear went all-in winning the poker tournament for his second time. Thank you to our sponsors, donors, volunteers and to all those who attended the event.

Each year since 2009, KPB has awarded scholarships to high school seniors in Pearland who demonstrate good stewardship of the environment and are pursuing higher education. In 10 years, $72,000 in scholarships have been awarded. This year, scholarships were awarded to six Pearland high school graduates, totaling $13,000.

“Through continued and increasing support from our community, we are honored to continue awarding scholarships to Pearland seniors who embody the term ‘environmental steward’,” Andrew Miller, Executive Director, said. Scholarship winners range from students who volunteered many hours helping keep Pearland beautiful to those who have started a non-profit organization, working to reduce waste and better our environment. Madison Segovia, a 2016 scholarship winner says, “I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to have these experiences without the help of Keep Pearland Beautiful and the generous scholarship that I received from the organization.” Attending Texas State University, she states, “I am proud to be a Bobcat that is reducing my paw print and I am so thankful to represent Keep Pearland Beautiful!”
