We all win when folks recycle their plastic shopping bags. Wilder Elementary School is doing their part to make Pearland the cleanest most beautiful city in Texas.
New Curbside Textile Recycling Program
Pearland residents can now recycle textiles curbside once per week thanks to a contract between Keep Pearland Beautiful and Simple Recycling. Information regarding the program and orange collection bags were distributed via standard mail. Just load acceptable items in the orange bags and set them at the curb on your regular recycling collection day. Simple Recycling uses their own marked transit vans to conduct pickups.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 85% of discarded textiles are sent to the landfill in the U.S. This collection program aims to capture those materials and will help Pearland reach its goal of diverting 34% of waste from the landfill, currently the national average. In just 3 years, Pearland’s diversion rate has increased from 10% – 17%. By offering a convenient textile recycling option, Keep Pearland Beautiful believes that we can sustain that momentum.
Simple Recycling will donate $20 for every ton of material collected to Keep Pearland Beautiful, so you can feel good about utilizing this program. However, Simple Recycling is a for profit company. So, if you donate your unwanted textiles to a local charity for a tax deduction, please continue to do so.
