The Joe Miller Environmental Scholarship Fund
Linda Cowles’ Former Executive Director of Keep Pearland Beautiful had this to say about KPB’s relationship with Joe Miller: “In early 2004, Joe Miller dropped in the Keep Pearland Beautiful office on the 3rd floor of City Hall. Don’t think he was really looking for us, but since we were old Cub Scout friends, we renewed our acquaintance that day. Before our visit was over, I invited him to consider joining our board of directors. He said yes shortly after that invitation, and so was born a dedicated KPB volunteer. Joe Miller immediately got involved with KPB and during his time on the board he was chair of Litter Prevention Committee and founded the Fund Development Committee. He agreed to serve as President of the KPB board for 2008-2009 and in our last conversation Joe mentioned establishing an environmental scholarship fund for some deserving Pearland kid. Joe was a wonderful, caring human being who has been greatly missed.”
In the Fall of 2008 the KPB Board of Directors established the scholarship fund in memory of Joe
Miller this staunch supporter of all environmental programs. Memorial gifts from family and friends donated to KPB in Joe’s honor provided the start-up funds for the scholarship fund. Students at Pearland High School with an interest in environmental stewardship were eligible to apply for the first scholarships.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist worthy Pearland senior students who have demonstrated good stewardship of the environment and who wish to continue their studies at a four year college/university, a two year college, or a trade/technical school.
On May 14, 2009 at the Pearland High School Senior Awards Ceremony, Keep Pearland Beautiful presented the first Joe Miller Environmental Scholarships to James Tuttle and Jon-Michael Hensley. Each of these students received a $1000 check to use for their higher education expenses.
In 2010 the first friends of Keep Pearland Beautiful fundraiser was held for the scholarship fund. The Miller Family members (JoAnne Knodel, Andrew Miller and Elizabeth) together with Joe Miller’s poker club friends have been instrumental in success of the now annual event. Since then the annual “Pocket Pear Texas Hold ‘Em Tourney” has raised monies dedicated to providing scholarships for deserving young environmentalists. To date $35,000 in scholarships has been awarded.
